Business Report from the CEO

In the financial results of the Group for the second quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2024 (FY2024/3), we achieved increases in both sales and profit compared with the same period of previous fiscal year. Net sales were 221.1billion yen (150.0 billion yen in the same period of the previous fiscal year), ordinary profit was 42.0 billion yen (12.3 billion yen in the same period of previous fiscal year), and profit attributable to owners of parent was 23.1 billion yen (9.6 billion yen in the same period of previous fiscal year). Meanwhile, we revised our full-year operating results forecast in consideration of the progress of each business.

 

In the Entertainment Contents business, sales in the Consumer area increased due to stable contributions of repeat titles in both sales and profits, and inclusion of Rovio’s results from this September. Overall, however, the business posted higher sales and lower profits compared with the same period of previous fiscal year due to weak performance of new titles in Full Game and F2P. In the Pachislot and Pachinko Machines businesses, we promoted sales centered on pachislot machines including Smart Pachislot Hokuto No Ken and Smart Pachislot BIOHAZARD: VENDETTA and achieved strong sales performance with 130,395 pachislot machines (34,712 in the same period of previous fiscal year) and 56,498 pachinko machines (23,960 in the same period of previous fiscal year), resulting in a significant increase in sales and profit compared with the same period of previous fiscal year. In the Resorts business, Phoenix Seagaia Resort saw steady growth in the number of individual customers and a recovery in group customer demand, which had been stagnant due to COVID-19. PARADISE CITY in Incheon also performed well, especially with Japanese VIPs, and its ordinary profit returned to profitability.

As stated above, we have revised our full-year operating results forecast. The Pachislot and Pachinko Machines business is performing strongly and sales and ordinary profit are expected to exceed the previous forecast. On the other hand, as the Consumer area in the Entertainment Contents business is expected to perform below the previous forecast, due to the recording of structural reform losses in European bases as extraordinary losses, profit attributable to owners of parent is expected to fall short of previous forecast.

As for the details of each business, the Entertainment Contents business faced rapid changes in the business environment surrounding the Consumer area, especially in Europe, such as a reactionary decline from the stay-at-home demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, an economic downturn due to inflation, and other factors. As a result, the profitability of the business has been lowered. In response to this, we resolved to implement a structural reform of our European bases centered on Creative Assembly Ltd. and other, as announced on September 28, 2023. We also revised downward our full-year operating results forecast for the Consumer area in light of the recent market environment and sales situation. However, in order to promote global branding of existing IPs we plan to conduct a simultaneous worldwide release of new titles, etc. for our mainstay IPs, such as “Sonic,” “Persona” and “Like a Dragon,” across multiple platforms, and will strive to steadily sell them. Though we have already implemented certain actions in terms of structural reforms, we will continue to consider any necessary measures.

 

In the Pachislot and Pachinko Machines business, sales of pachislot machines are going well, due to the hit of Smart Pachislot Hokuto No Ken and other machines and we expect to implement additional sales of Smart Pachislot Hokuto No Ken and Pachislot Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. In addition, we have rescheduled the launch of some titles from FY2024/3 to FY2025/3 in consideration of their approval status. In contrast to smart pachislot, the penetration of smart pachinko has been sluggish. Going forward, however, I believe that smart pachinko will become more popular due to the emergence of some smart pachinko machines with high utilization and the review of regulations. The pachislot and pachinko machines market environment continues to be favorable in terms of regulations and the procurement of parts is also improving. As our short-term goal during the period of the Medium-Term Plan (FY2022/3-FY2024/3), we will aim to become No. 1 in total utilization of pachislot and pachinko machines while continue to aim to win the “triple crown”: top share in utilization, installation and sales for long-term.

With regard to growth investment, in the Consumer area, Rovio Entertainment Corporation, which is the developer of Angry Birds and possesses high development and operational capabilities in global mobile F2P games, has now become a Group company and incorporated in our consolidated financial statements since this September. In addition, as an investment in the Gaming area we announced the acquisition of GAN Limited, a SaaS provider for casino operators in the United States and the B2C online gaming operator in Europe and South America. The closing of the acquisition is subject to approval from GAN shareholders at its general shareholders’ meeting, the receipt of regulatory approvals in relevant jurisdictions, and the satisfaction of other customary conditions. Although it will take some time until the closing, we will continue to steadily work on it. As such, our growth investments are progressing steadily, but our investment capacity is also increasing so we will continue to consider investments for future growth based on economic rationale.

We have entered the second half of the final year of our Medium-Term Plan. Although we have so far exceeded our consolidated Medium-Term Plan goals, we will strive to ensure that the revised full-year forecasts announced this time will be achieved and lead to further improvements. From now on, we will continue to aim to be “constantly creating, forever captivating”, and pursue initiatives towards the sustainable growth of our corporate value. We hope that we can continue to count on the ongoing support of each one of stakeholders.

Cumulative Sales of “Persona 5” Series Surpassed 10 Million Units—Further Strengthening of Global Branding for Greater Expansion of the IP

In the Consumer area of the Entertainment Contents Business, we continue to focus on “reinforcing the earnings base by strengthening the global branding of existing IPs” as our medium-term core strategy through the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, and are aiming to increase earnings by further strengthening existing mainstay IPs.

 

The Persona series is one of our mainstay IPs derived from the SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI series. The Persona series is a juvenile role-playing game (RPG) in which boys and girls who have awakened the ability of their “Persona,” their other inner self, confront occult incidents, and has gained popularity around the world. Since the release of Persona 5 in September 2016, we have been promoting the global branding of the IP through multi-platform development, remasters, and spin-offs. Thanks to these efforts, the cumulative sales of Persona 5 series exceeded 10 million units in December 2023. The remastered version, the Persona 5 Royal released in the previous fiscal year (October 2022), has enjoyed strong repeat sales this fiscal year, especially in Asia.

Furthermore, we released the latest spin-off of this title, Persona 5 Tactica, on November 17, 2023, simultaneously worldwide and on multiple platforms.

 

With this title we have taken on new challenges to broaden IP development, including the incorporation of a strategy RPG system, a first for the series. While maintaining the attractiveness of battle systems such as “1 MORE” attack, “All-out Attack” and of course the series’ greatest feature “Persona” attacks, players can experience the new fun of tactical gameplay and cooperating with squad mates.

Persona 3 Reload will be available simultaneously worldwide and on multiple platforms on February 2, 2024.

 

Released in July 2006, the original Persona 3 was the cornerstone of the popularity of the series, and has been remade for the modern consoles. The core elements of the game including scenarios and characters remain unchanged, but have undergone various upgrades. As well as the addition of new cutscenes with characters and voiced lines, the graphics have all been redone with stunning visuals for modern consoles. The animations have also been remade from scratch. Furthermore, the mechanics have been brushed up along with fine tuning of the game to improve the player experience, with the aim of appealing not only to fans of the previous titles, but also to a new fan base that has grown since the Persona 5 series.

We also plan to start to launch the service of Persona5: The Phantom X for smartphones in China* by licensing out to Perfect World Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chaoyang District, Beijing, China; CEO: Lu Xiaoyin; hereinafter “Perfect World”). Based on the ambiance and basic setting of Persona 5, this title will be a completely new smartphone game with a unique story by new phantom thieves in Tokyo. By entering the Chinese market through collaboration with Perfect World, a company with abundant knowledge and experience in the Asian mobile gaming market, we will further strengthen the global branding of this IP.

*Whether this game will be rolled out in Japan and other regions has not yet been determined.

 

In addition, we have asked actors Haruna Kawaguchi and Jun Shison to be the official ambassadors of the Persona series, and will work more on PR activities targeting not only existing fans but also a wide range of people by creating brand image commercials and TV commercials, etc. For the Persona series, we will focus on growth measures to achieve another level of presence as an IP, not just as individual titles.

Sammy’s Pachislot Machines Maintains Solid Performance to Drive Business Performance

In the medium-term plan, the Pachislot and Pachinko Machines business targets “becoming No. 1 in total utilization of pachislot and pachinko machines” and “maintaining stable earnings,” with “creating hits” and “improving business efficiency” as key strategies. In this fiscal year, Sammy’s pachislot machines are maintaining solid performance and driving our business performance. Since both sales and ordinary income are exceeding our initial forecast, we have revised our operating results forecast upward for the business.

 

Unit sales of Smart Pachislot Hokuto No Ken had already surpassed 60,000 units as of the end of July 2023, and demand remained high due to continued strong utilization. In response to this, we conducted additional sales during the third quarter and achieved the total unit sales of 80,000 units (as of the end of November 2023). This is the largest unit sales for Sammy’s No. 6 model machine.

As a new title for the second half of the current fiscal year, the installation of Pachislot Psalms of Planets Eureka Seven HI-EVOLUTION ZERO TYPE-ART started in November 2023. This is a new machine that inherits the DNA of the first Pachislot Psalms of Planets Eureka Seven, a popular machine that led the No. 5 model machine era.
This machine is the second “A-SLOT+*” machine, following Pachislot CODE GEASS Lelouch of the Rebellion 3 C.C.&Kallen Ver., which was installed in June 2023 as the first “A-SLOT+” machine from Sammy.

 

While inheriting the gameplay of the first generation, this new machine has evolved to allow players to fully enjoy the pleasure of hitting many bonus wins by realizing the highest combined bonus probability within the series. In addition, when hitting a big bonus (BB), the probability of entering ART** exceeds over 50% therefore the machine is offering expectations of large payouts while it is easy to play. It has been off to a good start with high utilization since its installation.

Furthermore, Smart Pachislot CODE GEASS Lelouch of the Rebellion/Lelouch of the Re;surrection is scheduled to be installed as our new smart pachislot machine in February 2024. The first Pachislot CODE GEASS Lelouch of the Rebellion was installed in 2012 as a No.5 model machine. It gained popularity as an “A+ART” machine with a special zone which became the cornerstone of subsequent series.

 

While the new machine follows the gameplay of the previous CODE GEASS series, it is the first AT* machine in this series. Under the advertising slogan: “This AT can be revived again and again,” this machine features “Mugen Shinsei” which makes the AT function enhance each time it is “revived.” In addition, “Geass Rush,” the strongest trigger to win large payouts inherited through the series, has been further evolved into as stock time (ST) type special zone, where players can expect to get rewards with an extremely high probability, depending on the winning combinations.

 

**Abbreviation for “assist time.” A situation in which players are more likely to win medals as the order of pressing buttons is navigated by an LCD or voice to win a small payout.

 

Smart pachislot offers users the advantage of playing pachislot comfortably without the hassle of inserting medals, while pachinko halls can expect a reduction in the burdens of carrying and cleaning medals, and power consumption. The penetration of Smart Pachislot is steadily progressing due in part to the huge success of Smart Pachislot Hokuto No Ken and other titles. In the next fiscal year and beyond, we will shift our lineup of pachislot machines to focus on smart pachislot towards smart pachislot market that is expected to remain strong and aim to create new hits following Smart Pachislot Hokuto No Ken and Pachislot Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress.
