About job hunting activities
Please tell us about your job hunting activities. Why did you decide to work for the SEGA SAMMY Group?

Nao
When I was in university, I studied financial statement analysis in a seminar and obtained my bookkeeping certification. This led me to look for a job in accounting, preferably for a company in the entertainment industry as I’ve always liked video games, and my whole family are SEGAfans. I also decided to join the company because the personnel staff were very kind and I enjoyed the interview.

Yuka
I also felt the kindness of the HR staff. In fact, I was hospitalized for two months during my job search and I had to withdraw from the selection process of several companies. However, SEGA’s human resources staff contacted me frequently to see how I was doing, and they waited until I was out of the hospital to make the selection. Such a caring attitude convinced me that they would help me with any problems or career advice after I joined the company, and I absolutely wanted to work here.

Ken
I was looking at a wide range of industries and thinking of working for a company that struck a chord with me. At that time, at a joint information session, I saw a human resources person explaining about Sammyin a particularly enjoyable way. I was attracted by the appeal of the people, so much so that I decided to cancel my idea of finding a job in my hometown and come to Tokyo just to work for this company.

Impressions before and after joining the company
What was different from the impressions you had before joining the company? Did you notice any differences?

Ken
My impression of “a company where I can enjoy working” has not changed. However, before joining the company, I assumed that there would be a lot of old-fashioned and rigid customs in such a large group. But in reality, this was not the case at all. I was surprised to learn that the company has a system and attitude of taking the initiative in adapting to the times, such as using electronic contracts to go paperless and using “raw greenpower” at the head office.

Nao
Before joining the company, I was worried that if I made a mistake and someone got angry at me, it might make it hard for me to work. However, after I was assigned to a department, I found that the seniors around me would carefully explain what I didn’t understand and would give me advice even before I said I didn’t understand something. Being a member of society is much more fun than I had imagined.
Also, when I joined SEGA SAMMY, I had a full month of training for new employees, so I was able to acquire the knowledge necessary to become a member of society, and I am able to do my job with peace of mind.

Yuka
When thinking of the SEGA SAMMY Group, I had a strong impression of the game business, but after joining the company, I was surprised to find out that they also have other areas of business, including pachinko/pachislot, animation production, and resort business. With such a wide range of businesses, I believe that even if I change my mind about what I want to do in the future, I will be able to find another rewarding job within the group. I also feel that the company is striving to develop a work environment where a diverse range of employees can enjoy working together, and everyone can expand and grow in their work.

Job description and job satisfaction
What do you find rewarding and enjoyable about your work?

Ken
I work in the General Affairs Department as a facility manager. My duties range from maintenance of furniture and equipment used in the group’s offices to arranging for repairs and activities related to environmental conservation. In addition, since this covers all of the group’s offices across the country, there is always some sort of breakdown or repair occurring somewhere. Therefore, each member of the section is in charge of multiple projects, and it can be difficult for me to always multitask and make sure that everything is done by the deadline. However, as a young person, I am entrusted with a variety of tasks, which makes it challenging and fun. For example, I was in charge of decorating the company for Christmas, from meeting with partner companies to placing orders to the actual decoration. I’m happy to be able to do new things all the time.

Nao
I work in the Shared Accounting Department, which is responsible for checking payment applications and invoices from group companies, processing payments to suppliers, and recording monthly, quarterly, and yearly sales. Payments are usually processed at the end of the month, but sometimes unexpected payments occur, so I take special care to manage the schedule so that payments can be processed without delay. In addition, I regularly hold group meetings in English with the general managers of our group companies in the UK to introduce the situation in Japan through the presentation of financial results. These meetings are a great opportunity for me as an accountant and also for improving my English skills, so I am learning every day with the help of my senior colleagues in the department.

Yuka
The Business System Development Department is responsible for providing IT solutions in response to requests and improvement requests from within the company, which is a kind of “system consulting.” In order to develop IT tools that meet the needs of the field, we start with defining the requirements, then we determine what type of tools to build, and then we proceed with the programming ourselves as well as requesting work from outside vendors. My role is that of an assistant to the senior staff members in charge of the project, and I am currently studying beside them. As I was a literature major in university, I have no knowledge of systems, so I am learning as I go, but it is still quite difficult. However, more than knowledge, I think it is important to have the attitude of “detecting problems and coming up with appropriate solutions.” This attitude will be necessary in every department and business in the future, so I believe that I can grow by learning while always keeping this attitude in mind.

Awareness through work
What were some of the challenges you faced in your job?

Yuka
When I was a student, all I had to do was study and increase my knowledge, but now that I am working, I feel that it is important to understand the instructions of my supervisor and proceed with my work. In order to work smoothly, it is necessary to understand not only the content of the instructions, but also the “intention” behind the instructions, such as “why was this instruction given?” In the beginning, there were days when I had a hard time doing this. But when I shared my concerns with my boss, he immediately sat down with me to discuss the problem and we found a solution. That’s how I learned the importance of communicating my thoughts, rather than suppressing them.

Nao
I also realized the importance of communicating my feelings. In my early days at the company, I just accepted what my bosses told me, but as I progressed in my work, I began to think that it would be better to express my opinions when I felt that there might be a better way to do something, or that it would take more time to do something a certain way. Now, my boss understands and suggests another way, which makes my work more enjoyable. Just like what Yuka felt, I think communication is more important after entering the workforce.

Ken
I was once asked by my boss to create a document, but I ended up creating something different from what he intended. This happened because my boss seemed to be busy, and I hesitated to bother him, so I proceeded to make my own decisions even though I did not understand every point. However, I think it turned out to be a “good mistake” because my boss told me that I can ask him about anything that I didn’t understand, so now I ask him to explain anything that I don’t understand before proceeding with my work. If I make a mistake, SEGA SAMMY does not blame me for it, but instead tells me how to make the best use of it next time, which motivates me to try various things instead of looking backward. I am happy to be able to work in a company with such an atmosphere.

About learning and growth
Is there an environment for learning? How do you use the in-house university “SEGA SAMMY College”?

Ken
I think there is an image that in a large company, even in the same department, the work is completely divided and you can only acquire knowledge in specific areas. Here, you can acquire qualifications and knowledge outside of your own department depending on your own motivation, which is something I recommend to everyone who is looking for a job. I took a course on how to use Microsoft Outlook; there is a wide range of courses and training programs, from those on small themes like Microsoft Outlook to those for acquiring qualifications and business skills. In addition to real-time courses, archived videos are also available, which is convenient for learning in your spare time.

Yuka
I took the “Logical Thinking Skills” training program at SEGA SAMMY College. We were given different questions, for example, “If you have a café with a problem like this, what method would you use to attract customers?” The participants were divided into groups and they presented their ideas. Since people of all ages participate in the college courses, it is very stimulating to learn together with them.

Nao
I am a lecturer at the SEGA SAMMY College Level 3 Bookkeeping Course. I answer questions from the students and explain the mini-tests, making use of the bookkeeping qualification I obtained during my university days. It’s a lot of work to give a two-hour lecture each time, but I try my best to make sure that all the students understand the material. I would like to help every participant pass the exam, and I would like to contribute to the SEGA SAMMY Group so that they can acquire a wide range of knowledge, as some of them want to transfer to accounting because of this course.

Future goals
Please tell us about your goals, either near-term or future goals.

Ken
I would like to improve my “sense of speed” as quickly as possible in my multi-tasking work. There are still times when I have to wait until just before the deadline, or I have to ask my seniors for help because I don’t seem to be able to meet the deadline. Thus, my goal for the near future is to be able to steadily carry out tasks on my own. I also want to be trusted not only within my department but also by people in other departments who ask me for advice. To achieve this, I think it is important to always keep the work arrangements in mind and to gain experience.

Yuka
First of all, I would like to gain experience and acquire knowledge, make appropriate proposals for requests and improvements received from within the company, and work hard to have my proposals adopted. I would also like to improve my presentation skills so that I can be more persuasive when making proposals. After giving an internal presentation for the release of a new tool, I realized how poor my presentation was and how difficult it is to provide an easy-to-understand presentation. I believe that the only way to develop this ability is to repeat the process of implementation and feedback. I don’t have a clear goal for the future yet, but I would like to challenge myself in my private life as well, and I hope to be able to use the experiences and ideas I gain in my work. In a good sense, I’d like to mix my private and public life, and spend my days having enjoyable and fulfilling experiences.

Nao
In the future, I would like to be able to take a bird’s eye view of the company as a whole and steer the management in terms of finance and accounting, for example, where there is a lack of funds, where there is waste, and where funds should be invested. At the regular monthly meetings of the department, I have the opportunity to learn about the general flow of the P/L (Profit and Loss Statement) and B/S (Balance Sheet) of SEGA and Sammy, and I can ask questions. Also, I am especially indebted to my direct supervisor, whose teaching style is very easy to understand, and whose leadership skills I admire. Eventually, I would like to become a manager who can instruct subordinates properly and carefully like my supervisors.
Thank you very much for your time today.
