Business Report from the CEO

Continuously Striving to Reinforce
the Earnings Base of Main Businesses
and Enhance Corporate Value
Sustainably
President and Group CEO, Representative Director
Haruki Satomi
The Group’s financial results in the second quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023 (FY2023/3), progressed generally in line with our initial expectations. As the Entertainment Contents Business performed steadily as a whole in line with our forecast and the Pachislot and Pachinko Machines Business achieved strong sales, the Group’s sales were 150.0 billion yen (134.8 billion yen in the same period of the previous fiscal year), ordinary income was 12.3 billion yen (14.7 billion yen in the same period of the previous fiscal year), and profit attributable to owners of the parent was 9.6 billion yen (12.0 billion yen in the same period of the previous fiscal year).
In the Consumer area of the Entertainment Contents Business, while sales of Full Game were slightly lower than expected, sales of F2P progressed strongly centered on “Project SEKAI: Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku”. In addition, the impact of foreign exchange rates boosted by the weak yen also contributed to the overall solid progress. In the Pachislot and Pachinko Machines Business, sales of pachislot machines (No. 6.5 models), especially “Pachislot Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress”, were strong, and all other titles sold also exceeded the plans, resulting in sales of 34,712 pachislot units and 23,960 pachinko units. The Resort Business also posted a significant year-on-year increase in sales and a narrowing of loss margin due to the relaxation of behavioral restrictions associated with COVID-19.
In the second half of FY2023/3, the Entertainment Content Business will proceed to launch new titles, including our flagship IPs; in addition to “Sonic Frontiers” released on November 8, remastered and remade titles, etc. of such as “Persona” and “Ryu ga Gotoku” series will be introduced. These new titles will be released simultaneously around the world for multiple platforms. The “Sonic the Hedgehog” series has recently been developed in a variety of media mixes, and the second movie, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”, which was sequentially released from March 2022, has surpassed $400 million at the box office, setting a new record for a game IP. In addition, a new animated series “Sonic Prime” is scheduled to air on Netflix on December 15, 2022, and is expected to attract a new fan base thanks to the success of the movie. “Sonic Frontiers”, which was launched under this environment, is the first completely new Sonic game in five years, and we are planning a variety of promotional measures to attract not only existing fans but also new users. The first step will be to implement measures to expand sales for the holiday season. Although the current market is showing some signs of slowing down due to changes in consumer behavior resulting from the normalization of socioeconomic activities, the game market is expected to continue to grow on a global scale in the future. We will continue to strengthen the global branding of existing IPs and strive to expand profitable opportunities for the Entertainment Content Business.
In the Pachislot and Pachinko Machines Business, we will accelerate the launch of major new titles in the second half of FY2023/3. We will continue to expand our pachislot machine lineup of No 6.5 models, which are performing well, and we also plan to launch multiple new pachinko machines. In addition, smart pachislot machines began to be introduced to the market in November. Smart pachislot machines are attracting a great deal of interest from users and hall operators, and we expect the introduction will lead to further revitalization of the market. Although there are some factors that require continued attention, such as the declining approval rate of prototype testing and procurement of parts, the medium-term market forecast is becoming very positive. Therefore, we will take all possible measures to meet the growing demand.
The second quarter of FY2023/3 marks the turnaround point of our three-year Medium-Term Plan that started from FY2022/3. So far, we have exceeded our initial plan, and the entire company will continue to work across the Group to achieve this fiscal year’s goals and strive to achieve the goals for the next fiscal year, the final year of the Medium-Term Plan. We will also continue to examine opportunities for growth investments that will accelerate our long-term growth. As we continue to create experiences that move the heart and work to sustainably enhance our corporate value, we ask for the continued support of all of our stakeholders.

Rush to Launch Mainstay IPs: “Sonic”, “Like a Dragon”, and “Persona” Series(Updated on Jan. 20, 2023)
In response to the recent expansion of the global video game market, we have been successively strengthening the global branding of our titles, which is at the core of our IP strategy.
The “Sonic the Hedgehog” series, which is especially popular overseas and has a huge fan base of all ages, is one of Sega’s flagship IPs with total sales of 1.51 billion units and downloads (including downloads of free-to-play titles) to date. Released sequentially from March 2022, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”, the movie sequel to “Sonic the Hedgehog”, was a box-office hit and surpassed the performance of the previous one. In November 2022, “Sonic Frontiers”, the first completely new Sonic game in nearly five years, was released simultaneously worldwide on multiple platforms and it has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide (announced on December 13, 2022). In addition, a new animated series “Sonic Prime “ has started streaming on Netflix on December 15, 2022, which is expected to attract a new fan base. We will continue to aim to expand the Sonic brand awareness through a more diverse mix of media, including games, movies, animation, collaborations and licensing.

The “Like a Dragon (Ryu ga Gotoku)” series has gained popularity as an M-rated video game that depicts the lives of men living and working in a red-light district, with total sales of 19.8 million units since the first release in 2005. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, creators of the series, released the PC version of “Judgement” series this year, and will simultaneously release worldwide the remake version of “Like a Dragon: Ishin! “and “Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name” in 2023, as well as “Like a Dragon 8 (Working Title)” in 2024, for multiple platforms. All of these titles have been much anticipated by users, and SEGA will promote the global branding of these titles as mainstay IPs originating in Japan.

Celebrating its 26th anniversary this year, the mega-hit role-playing game series Persona is one of our popular IPs with enthusiastic fans all over the world and total sales of around 16.8 million units to date. Persona 5 Royal, which adds many new elements to Persona 5, was remastered to support multiplatform and released in October 2022. As Persona 5 Royal (Remaster) has carefully transferred the well-received original version, and has had an extremely high Metascore*, just like the original version. In 2023, remastered versions of popular titles, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable, are planned to be released on multiple platforms, and it is expected that they will attract new users as well as existing fans. Persona series also has strong popularity in animated series in Japan and overseas, and we will continue to promote the series in various ways to strengthen its global branding.

“Pachislot Hard Boiled” to Debut for No. 6.5 Model as the Latest in the Sammy Classic Series(Updated on Oct. 3, 2022)
Based on the medium-term strategy of “Creating hits x business efficiency” in the Pachislot and Pachinko Machines Business, the “Sammy Classic” series, which revitalizes our popular IPs of the past, has been well received. As the fifth installment of the series, “Hard Boiled 2,” which ranked No.1 in the “Sammy Classic General Election”*1in the No. 4 models category, will be revived as the “Pachislot Hard Boiled” for No. 6.5 model. The new machine is scheduled to be delivered sequentially nationwide from October 2022.
*1 An election conducted in February 2022, in which pachislot machine fans were asked to vote for their favorites from the past machines to be launched as the Sammy Classic series. For details, please see “Election results” in the link below.

“Pachislot Hard Boiled” features simple gameplay with opportunities to win big payouts and also classic effects that fans of the original model will remember fondly. Furthermore, the new feature utilizing AT*2 unique to the No. 6.5 models allows a wide range of players, from old fans to those seeking a high level of gameplay, to enjoy playing it.
The upper limit of the number of games in the advantageous section and the upper limit of the payout have been revised in the pachislot No. 6.5 models, which have attracted a great deal of attention from players since their launch in June 2022. The “Pachislot Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress,” our first No. 6.5 model, was launched in July and has been very well received. The revival of the classic “Hard Boiled 2” as a No. 6.5 model is expected to spur a return of more dormant players.
