Rhythm & Adventure Game Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! feat. Hatsune Miku

Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! feat. Hatsune Miku is a rhythm and adventure game developed for iOS and Android, the result of collaboration between SEGA, which is engaged in the development of Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA series, and CyberAgent Group’s Colorful Palette Inc. It is chiefly a rhythm game where users can play various Vocaloid songs, but it also has a rich story element portraying the tales of the original characters. We talked to two of the people involved in production behind the scenes of this experiences that move the heart.

We want to provide “Experiences that move the heart” with new Hatsune Miku title

As business manager for this project, I was in charge of producing. This is a new Hatsune Miku title, which introduces a host of original characters. Development of the game was the fruit of cooperation among numerous partners, including Colorful Palette, the collaborator and Crypton Future Media, the official licensor of Hatsune Miku, and all the creators. Hatsune Miku is an IP with a long history and holding many fans who have strong feelings. So it was a process of trial and error, as we sought to develop a game that could be received and enjoyed by both existing fans and new users, without destroying the Hatsune Miku culture.

It was a worthwhile challenge, and we’ve come up with a work in which amazing, dynamic characters really come alive. Players can experience a lot of excitement through this game, as they read characters’ stories, change their costumes and stage their own live performances, as well as going to see virtual live performances with other users.

We will continue to focus our energy on managing the game and creating additional opportunities for users to experience even more enjoyment. I would like to build up Project SEKAI while enjoying this game alongside users.

My role was to act as production assistant and manage the schedule and budget for the music production of Project SEKAI. It was my first time to be involved in the area of music production management, so it was a steep learning curve which brought a series of challenges, but with the help of the creators, we were able to come up with an amazing lineup of songs. Also, with the cooperation of various partners, including Crypton Future Media, we were able to realize our goal of enabling “sing together”—which was the theme for the whole project—bringing Hatsune Miku and other members of Virtual Singer sing together with a host of original characters.

This game is also equipped with innovative features such as a Virtual Live Performance, which lets you enjoy attending live concerts together with users nationwide. I hope many users will enjoy the experience “singing together.
We’ve been pursuing a variety of initiatives such as collaborating with rhythm game for arcade center, developing merchandizing, and tying up with karaoke parlors. Going forward, we are planning an even more exciting lineup of events, not only in the game but also related real-world events. I hope everyone will look forward to it.

Virtual Live Performances, in which in-game characters and real-world users can enjoy live concerts together, are held in conjunction with in-game events. In addition to the characters performing songs, there are also hosted periods between songs where characters talk to one another and the audience, enabling users to experience the look and feel of attending a real live performance.
