Focus3 | SEGA SAMMY Sustainability Weeks

The SEGA SAMMY Group is working to raise awareness about sustainability management among both executives and employees. As an initiative toward this goal, the Group held the inaugural “SEGA SAMMY Sustainability Weeks” program, a series of events over a two-week period in October 2021.

Opportunities for Individuals to Think and Act from Multiple Perspectives

The purpose of the SEGA SAMMY Sustainability Weeks program was to encourage individuals working for the Group, including executives and employees, to think about and take action on sustainability issues from multiple perspectives. A total of 17 events were held during the two-week period, including training programs and seminars focusing on people with disabilities, LGBT+ issues, Environment, and diversity, equity and inclusion.

Case 1 | Experience-Based Training for Executives about Courtesy towards People with Disabilities

Participants gain first-hand experience (working with elderly people).

Group executives attended a courtesy training program designed to improve their understanding about people with disabilities. The program, which attracted approximately 50 attendees, consisted of a lecture followed by four activity sessions in which participants learned through direct personal experience how to support wheelchair users, people with visual and hearing impairments, and the elderly.

In addition, Hiroko Sasaki, President & CEO of ChangeWAVE Inc., was invited to present an unconscious bias workshop that encouraged participants to consider whether they themselves were biased. The workshop looked at ways to tackle unconscious bias. The results of a survey carried out before the seminar were used to raise awareness of unconscious bias among SEGA SAMMY Group management executives.

Case 2 | Seminars and Lectures about LGBT+ Issues and Diversity

We also presented a variety of special lectures for employees. One of these lectures focused on “opportunities for employees with disabilities to play an active role”. Participants viewed videos of interviews in which SEGA SAMMY Group employees with disabilities described the obstacles that they faced in their work activities, and the solutions that had been devised. Attendees commented afterwards that the lecture had helped them to recognize issues that they had not previously noticed in their day-to-day work activities.

There were also lectures by outside instructors on the themes of LGBT+ issues and diversity. To raise awareness, all participants who expressed support were given rainbow straps indicating their status as “allies” (people who understand and support LGBT+ people).

Case 3 | Raising Environmental Awareness through Food

Socially and environmentally responsible menu selections from the L’thical range

During the SEGA SAMMY Sustainability Weeks program, the cafeteria at Group headquarters offered menu options from the L’thical sustainable food brand. This initiative provided an opportunity to consider social and environmental issues from the perspective of familiar food items. Supplied by the catering company LEOC Co., Ltd., L’thical brand products are produced with a focus on social and environmental issues. For example, vegetable proteins are used instead of meat, which requires substantial inputs of water and energy during production processes.
